About the Coalition

Mission

The mission of the TCCCC is to engage organizations, agencies, institutions and individuals to work collaboratively to reduce the impact of cancer in Texas and promote the Texas Cancer Plan.

The aim of the Coalition is to advance cooperative efforts that focus on the goals of the Texas Cancer Plan: cancer prevention, early detection and treatment, professional training, cancer data and planning, and survivorship.

Why

The burden of cancer falls on the shoulders of individuals with a cancer diagnosis and their families and friends seeking effective treatment and support services. Cancer, in its many forms, impacts personal health and family well-being, communities, workplaces and businesses, and health care providers. Because it crosses all aspects of family and community life, it requires nothing less than a broad-based, integrated response.

Effective cancer prevention and control programs reduce the cancer burden. Collaboration among entities and individuals with expertise, resources or commitments in cancer control expands our ability to make a comprehensive response to cancer and to have the greatest impact possible in reducing its personal, emotional, social and economic costs to the citizens of Texas.

History

The Texas Department of Health (TDH) received funding in 1998 from the Centers for Disease Control to implement the Texas Cancer Plan through its Texas Comprehensive Cancer Control Program. In partnership with the Texas Cancer Council, TDH initiated the formation of the Texas Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalition to facilitate collaboration and communication among a wide range of member agencies working in cancer control.

In 2003, by mutual agreement between TDH and the Texas Cancer Council, active administration of the Coalition, now including over 30 members representing major cancer control stakeholders in the state, transferred to the Texas Cancer Council. TDH continues to provide funding of the Coalition and plays an integral role in its continued success.

Who

The Coalition membership represents the many efforts underway to reduce the cancer burden in Texas and includes consumers as well as individuals who represent public and private educational, treatment, research and patient support organizations. From the piney woods of east Texas to the Rio Grande valley and the panhandle, individuals who work each day to support their cancer clients and visionary planners and researchers seek opportunities to create an effective response that will conquer cancer.
